Swine flu vaccine available in fall
Since the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, more popularly known as the Swine Flu, started making headlines late last month, pharmaceutical companies have been under pressure to come up with a vaccine for it. For a whole month, the world tensely waited for a solid weapon against the new pandemic. It seems that the race is over, though, because Swedish company Novartis has announced the production of its first batch of H1N1 vaccines. This batch is not for release to the public, but will be used in pre-clinical studies to ensure its safety. Novartis expects to have a commercially available version ready by fall.
It certainly is a relief to hear that we can all soon be protected from this highly contagious though mild virus. I wonder though if the vaccine will be accessible and affordable to the majority, especially in a third-world country like mine. More frequently, the people who are most susceptible to illnesses, such as the vulnerable ones living below the poverty line, are also those who cannot afford to get themselves protected.
Almost 100 Philippine swine flu cases
As I was browsing YahooNews just this morning, I read that the number of people affected with swine flu in the Philippines is nearing the 100 mark. Specifically, the current count is at 92. This is the highest number of cases in Asia.
All around I see establishments putting up screening booths at the entrance, asking for any symptoms of colds and cough, and checking people’s temperatures with a digital thermometer. I think this is good. At a time like this, it’s necessary to take due precaution and remain watchful. However, I do believe that it’s not a cause for too much panic.
As of now, the swine flu is just like any other flu. As long as your immune system is intact, your body should be able to mount the proper defense against it. It’s a self-limiting disease. All kinds of flu are potentially deadly, especially in people whose immune systems are compromised, or are suffering from any other concomitant disease. That’s why it’s important to get enough rest, eat a balanced meal, maybe take some vitamin supplements if you don’t think you’re getting adequate amounts of it in your diet, and drink a lot of fluids.
The danger is if the virus mutates to a strain that’s more difficult to control. That’s why we eagerly await a vaccine to put a stop to the virus before it goes haywire.
